Trauma and chronic stress do not just live in our memories; they live in our muscles, our breath, and our nervous system. When we experience overwhelming events, our bodies often “lock” that energy into a state of perpetual readiness—leading to chronic tension, digestive issues, or a feeling of being disconnected from oneself.

At Cedar Tree Counseling in Tulsa, OK, we specialize in Embodiment and Somatic Awareness. This clinical approach moves beyond “talk therapy” to address the physiological roots of distress, helping you inhabit your body with a sense of safety, presence, and ease.

What is Embodiment?

Embodiment is the practice of “coming home” to the body. Most people living with trauma or high anxiety exist primarily from the neck up, treating their body as a vehicle to be controlled rather than a source of wisdom.

Somatic Awareness is the clinical tool we use to bridge this gap. By developing “interoception”—the ability to sense the internal state of the body—you can begin to identify the subtle shifts in your nervous system before they escalate into a panic attack, an emotional outburst, or a total shutdown.

The Body as the “First Responder”

The brain’s survival centers (the brainstem and limbic system) process information much faster than the logical prefrontal cortex. By the time you “think” you are stressed, your body has already reacted.

The Somatic Signal The Survival State The Embodiment Shift
Tight chest / Racing heart Fight or Flight Using “grounding” to tell the brain the environment is safe.
Numbness / Heaviness Shutdown (Freeze) Using gentle “orienting” to bring the system back online.
Clenched jaw / Shallow breath High Alert Using “somatic tracking” to release stored tension.

Our Clinical Somatic Techniques

At Cedar Tree Counseling, we integrate several evidence-based somatic modalities to help you regulate your nervous system in real-time.

1. Somatic Tracking

We help you observe bodily sensations with “neutral curiosity” rather than fear. By simply noticing the sensation (e.g., “There is a tightness in my solar plexus”) without trying to change it, you allow the nervous system to complete its natural cycle of arousal and release.

2. Grounding and Resourcing

We help you identify “Internal Resources”—places in the body that feel calm, neutral, or strong. When you feel overwhelmed, we use grounding techniques (like the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory scan or foot-to-floor awareness) to anchor your system back to the present moment.

3. Titration and Pendulation

Trauma work is done in “micro-doses.”

  • Titration: We only touch on small “drops” of difficult sensations at a time so your system isn’t overwhelmed.
  • Pendulation: We help you swing between a place of “activation” and a place of “resource,” teaching your brain that it can move in and out of stress safely.

Reclaiming the “Window of Tolerance”

Through embodiment work, we aim to expand your Window of Tolerance. This is the zone where you can handle the “waves” of life without becoming hyper-aroused (anxious/angry) or hypo-aroused (numb/depressed). Somatic awareness gives you the “rudder” to stay in the center of the flow.

The mind can tell stories, justify behaviors, and minimize pain. But the body never lies. It keeps the score. Embodiment work isn’t about ‘fixing’ a broken body; it’s about learning to listen to the body’s language so that you can become an ally to your own nervous system. Healing happens when the mind and body finally start speaking the same language.
